14Feb Zoom h4n Firmware update.
A few people have had problems trying to use the audio trick I pointed out a few weeks back. If you want to record a single microphone into both channels of your zoom h4n with different audio levels using a splitter then you’ll want to upgrade the firmware on your zoom h4n to 1.72.
The old 1.50 firmware only allows you to adjust the audio level on both channels together. The upgrade allows individual audio levels to be adjustment. This allows you to set channel one lower then channel two.
I cover everything you’ll need to know for this upgrade in the video and if you still need a splitter they’re dirt cheep.

Hey there. Love your site. I think you’re referring to INPUT level, not VOLUME level (as in what you hear through your headphones). Am I right on this?
Of course, if you lower your input you’ll naturally hear it less, but it’s not the same as lowering the volume independently so you could, for example, just hear the boom mic and not the lav (while both were being recorded). It wasn’t clear to me until I saw the installation process where you unpair the input. Nitpicky? maybe.
Anyhow, keep up the good work.

I would consider the terms interchangeable. If you adjust the volume on a microphone or change the input level, isn’t that the same thing?
At least the point came across in the end I suppose.

Hi,
New to the site. Love the site a lot.
Been reading a lot of your old articles and the comments.
I bought a zoom h4n based on your reviews. Got it brand new for 272$ no tax no shipping…woo amazon!
Just wanted to comment…
PPL ARE HUGE DICKS to you. Correcting your grammer and spelling and giving a crap about how you verbage things.
I just wanted to say thanks for an awesome informative site and I don’t give a crap if you can’t spell. You can sure as hell operate your damn camera better than a lot of other folk. Keep at it!

I am trying to update the firmware in my Zoom H4N as your show in the video, but I get a message on the Zom screen that says “checking data” then “error” then “turn off”. Any idea what I did wrong?

Might want to re-download the firmware from Zoom.
