16Apr Makerbot 501pl plate print out.
Looks like I wasn’t the only one thinking about making quick release plates with the makerbot. Thingiverse member NRP put together this version of the 501pl quick release plate. His design is a bit different then mine but it’s cool to see that the idea works. I also found a few designs for quick release plates that are no longer made. This could be really great if you own an older fluid head tripod and need a few extra QR plates. I’m sure that as more people get 3d prints up and running there will be more and more useful camera gear designs released.

That is the future! We all have a 3D-Printer and stuff like that we can download, and print instead of getting it from somewhere. I love it. I want a 3D printer, but they are quite expensive…

Just a quick question, and I mean this in the nicest possible way… How hard does it get? The output from the Makerbot, that is. Most sliders are made from some sort of metal, and I wonder whether the Makerbot slider will be able to handle the stress.
Also, I’d be interested in the Makerbot for some custom guitar parts – nuts and bridges for lap slide guitar, custom knobs for guitars and amps, and so on.
Cheers

The output head of the makerbot is supposed to be around 250 degrees C, which shouldn’t be enough heat to stress out the metal travel rods. I have heard of people needed to replace bearings over time, but that’s pretty standard. I’m still waiting on mine, so If you have any other questions I’ll know more once I start putting it together.

Sorry! Didn’t make myself clear. When I said the ‘slider’, I meant the copy 501 ‘plate’ that the makerbot will print out… just wondering about it’s strength in relation to the real Manfrotto plate. 😉 I guess you will find out about that when you start using it.

The plastic is supposed to be about as tough as a lego. So not as strong as metal but should be pretty solid. I’ve got a lot of designs ready to try out once I get the makerbot put together. I’ll keep you posted.
