26Jun Tascam DR-40 Firmware update version 1.20
The Tascam DR-40 just received a firmware update to version 1.20. The previous firmware version 1.10 added independent control of both the left and right audio inputs (more on that here). The newest version of the firmware isn’t anything quit so dramatic. Basically it allows you to flip the instrument tuning display over by pressing a button, which makes it easier to read when tuning a guitar. I was hoping that Tascam would’ve add the ability to use the unit as a usb audio interface, maybe next time.
You can download the latest firmware for you Tascam DR-40 here. If you’re having trouble or need a quick overview of the installation process, check out the video guide here. And if you’re wondering how the Tascam DR-40 stacks up against the Zoom h4n, you might want to check out this earlier post.

Hey Deejay,
Thanks to your videos, I’ve been considering the purchase of a Tascam DR-40.
Then I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCuf_tLrmS4
The DR-40 puts out a helicopter-like interference sound while recording using an external shotgun mic. I googled the issue and I guess it is quite common. According to Tascam’s support page for the DR-40, it’s from using an ‘unbalanced mic’. Would you mind explaining exactly what that means?
I have two ebay EM-320E shotgun mics coming in the mail (https://vimeo.com/42979279), and I guess I’d like to know whether or not I’d run into that issue with the DR-40 should I decide to pull the trigger on one.
Love the podcast, btw. I can get my noob on at work now! The one criticism that I have is of your summary of Sony technology. Your overview of the a99 had some inaccuracies regarding SLT tech. I’m a Sony SLT shooter, and I realized that some of the stuff you were saying might be discouraging for potential Sony adopters.
