13Aug Nexus 7 mounting bracket for your DSLR rig
After posting that video demonstrating the Nexus 7 tablet as a monitor and controller, the next question was “How do you mount it to a rig?”. After doing some hunting I found the above mounting solution. This basically uses a RAM Mount Tab-Tite Quick Release Tablet Holder with a RAM Mount 1 inch ball adapter to mount the tablet to the rig. Total cost for me was about $35, but that’s because I already had a few RAM Mount parts around.
To use this you’ll also need the double socket adapter ($7) and the 1/4 20 to 1 inch ball adapter ($4) which brings the price of this mounting method to just under $50. That’s not exactly low price, but it does provide a very secure method of mounting the tablet to the side of a camera rig.
The other nice feature is that the RAM Mount Tab-Tite Quick Release Tablet Holder gives you plenty of room to reach the USB port, Headphone jack, and power controls. It also provides a 1/4 inch lip around the top and sides of the tablet to protect it from impact.
The adapter bracket is spring loaded and can stretch up to 9 inches so it could easily be used to mount other android tablets if needed. I’ll post a video on the adapter tonight or tomorrow so you can get a closer look at how well it works as a tablet mount.
Even though the Tab-Tite Quick Release Tablet Holder works well, the price tag is still up there. If anyone else comes up with a good lower cost option, let me know I’ll put a post together on it.
You can find more pictures of the adapter here.

I found a solution I like better using an Arkon 7″ tablet auto mount. I’ll post photos when I get it rigged. What about sunshade? This Nexus is not bright in daylight.

Send some pictures once you put it together. I was think for a sun hood just cut some craft foam and use Velcro to mount it.

This seems like a pretty cool setup Deejay. I’m already tempted to get the Nexus anyways. In what cases will you be using this over your other monitors?

I see the biggest use for this with a small crane or steady cam. All the controls for the camera and a monitor in a single device make it handy on the crane. On a steady cam the operator could look at the back of the screen, while I hold onto the tablet and make sure he doesn’t crash into anything.
If the software were a little more stable I might even say it was good for a client monitor on stationary shots. But i’d hate to hand it over to someone and have it crash 10 min later.

Very cool!
Can we get a photo of the front of the rig? None of your shots show the actual screen of the N7.
Thanks!

Video will be up tomorrow with some more pictures. I’ll be sure to include a front facing shot.

This would work out better for 10$. It’s not on the rig though but on a separate tripod.

Thanks for the heads up Yiannis, I’ll order one and take a closer look at it. $10.98 is a pretty good price.

I wish i could fit my iPad there but still there is no app like this on the appstore.
Just DSLR camera remote HD ($24.99) which is a great app but only works if you plug the dslr on a computer with Wifi. http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/dslr-camera-remote/

You can do pretty much the same thing with Splashtop for $4.99: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/splashtop-2-remote-desktop/id382509315?mt=8
There probably wont be a wired camera controller/monitor app until apple enables USB host options on there devices. It could be awhile.

Thanks! I downloaded that app some days ago.
Responds very quick. Musch more faster than teamviewer. But it’s only. PC to iPad, not PC to PC.
I’ll give a try i guess.

definitely yes. Unfortunately.

Just received the Ram mount and assembled it. The little screws that connect the end cups to the spring base seem like they could come loose? Have you noticed this as an issue?
August 29th, 2012 at 2:02 pm
I had to apply a considerable amount of force to put my screws in. Didn’t seem like they would come loose at all, but I also used all 5 on each side.
August 29th, 2012 at 5:21 pm
Wow, thanks for the quick response! I also used all 5 screws and It seems reasonably secure, but the end cups do have some wobble in them and the screws only apply pressure and don’t lock in the cups. I’m hoping this is normal? I’d be bummed if my Nexus went flying if the spring loaded cup came off!

I’ll take a look at mine a get back to Craig. I’m pretty sure mine fit flush into the provided slots.

Great idea. I used a TPU case fro the Nexus 7 and it worked great as well. It could be another inexpensive option.
I have a few pics here:

What exactly is the piece of the rig that is holding up the other end of the adapter?
October 28th, 2012 at 7:59 am
The square bracket is a CPM Uni-Strut and the rig is aCPM Flyer Cage Kit.

I’m wondering what hardware you are mounting the Ram mount equipment to. It looks like a flash bracket of some sort, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it. If you already reviewed it earlier, I’d like to see the post. (I went back a few pages in the older entries, but didn’t see it).

The square bracket is CPM Uni-Strut. It mounts on 15mm rails and has 1/4 20 threads on both sides. Here’s a post on it.

Any thoughts about using a bumper case (TPU, hard shell, etc.) along with the Mosy Mount? At $15 for the mount (so ~$20 including bumper case), it’s costs just a hair more than that $11 bracket you posted and a fair bit cheaper than the RAM holder. All you need is a magic arm and you’re good to go.
Picked up the N7 recently and would love to justify the purchase as useful for more than just reading ebooks 🙂 (though it’s great for that).

You can give it a try. From what I understand, those glue on to the back of your tablet (could be wrong). I use a slide in case so that wouldn’t work for me.
January 4th, 2013 at 1:58 pm
Yes, AFAIK it’s glued to whatever device you want. That’s the purpose of the bumper case for the tablet– you just stick the mount onto the case and then pop the tablet in the case whenever you want to mount it as a monitor. The tablet remains pristine, but with the case it can be mounted as needed.
I may look into doing this once Panasonic gets live video working over WiFi between the GH3 and their Android app.

I am looking at a similar option for mounting a 10″ tablet as monitor on my rig. There is a RAM Mount for that http://bit.ly/WaNoS9 but I cant find any Back for it, that hast a female 1/4 20 so I could attach it directly to my rigs monitor arm. Wonder if anyone else ran into that problem?
