24Mar DFN Mail bag Episode 2 – DSLR FILM NOOB
Questions:
What are your thoughts on the Panasonic GH4?
I’m upgrading from a 550d which camera would you choose?
Do you think the EOS-M needs an external pre-amp or is the internal pre-amp decent?
Be sure to leave your questions in the comment section or on twitter.

Hey,
I have the GH4 on pre order myself. I have been shooting with the GH2 and now GH3 sense they first came out. I love these cameras.
Here is a good site to follow for GH4 info.
You will find HDMI out at 4K, 10bit and 4.2.2 to external recorder. (Atomos, and Odyssey 7Q upgrades at Nab?)
Also with no mirror you can use just about any lens out there. C-Mount, Cannon, Nikon the list goes on and on.
You will love this camera. Best, Richard Jett

What lenses do you use for your mail bag videos?
What lighting do you use for you mail bag videos?
I’m considering buying a jib for video work. Do you have any experience? or do you know other videographers who use one and if so do they use it often enough to justify the cost?
Thanks.

For the most part the show is shot on an old Canon 17-35mm f2.8 with a flora lighting kit from linco.
In the studio I have a ProAm 12 foot jib and an Aviator Travel Jib. The Travel Jib sees the most action simply because it’s easier to transport and setup, the ProAm isn’t amazing but it’s a pretty decent option in the $250 to $500 range and it’s great when you need make a major camera move or you want to shoot a reveil shot. Anything nicer than that I usually rent or borrow.

You are entertaining lol. And informative but what other camera’s will shoot ProRes?
I sold my 7D for a BmPCC mostly for it’s internal ProRes and high signal to noise ratios.
I couldn’t find many other “DSLR type” cameras that would even give me 10bit output for ProRes. The only other ones I could find were the $2000 BmCC, $3000 BmPC 4K, $6000 Sony F3 and now the $1700 GH4.
Even the FS100, C100 and C300 are limited to 8bit outputs :/
I’m not saying 8bit footage is bad but if I’m bloating a file with ProRes I want to be sure I’m filling it with useable information so I want a true 10bit signal.

You’re right Peter, if you “can’t live without” 10bit, the BMCC is a good option. If 8-bit is acceptable (in most cases it is), there are plenty of cameras that record natively, have an equivalent format, or allow a Ninja to do the same. If I had my choice I’d ask RED to license REDCODE as a standard to other manufactures and do away with prores all together.

Do they need RED to licenses? Isn’t REDCODE just Motion JPEG 2000 (which is already similar to Cineform), but yes I agree and would love MJ2 to be the standard codec rather than Apple ProRes/Avid DNxHD. I’m also liking cDNG a lot.
I really like how JPEG2000 uses ratios rather than bit rates, it might be harder to figure out what cards or drives will work but easier to gauge image quality.
I’d be happy with MJ2 at 6:1 for lossy HD 10bit 4:2:2 and cDNG for 12bit Lossless and leave those proprietary codecs for 14bit and 16bit footage.
