14May Zoom h1 and Tascam DR-05 shock mount.
A few weeks back I mentioned that I was working on a design for a Zoom H1 shock mount. Now that I’ve got the 3d printer up and running I can test out my design. I must say it works very well. I added a cold shoe adapter to the bottom of the shock mount, a 1/4 20 mount through the bottom, and placed 4 small holes around the outside so that you can easily tie-wrap audio cables.
I also added another spot for a rubber-band (red one in the font), in case you want to stiffen up the shock mount a little more. I hadn’t really planed on using this with the Tascam DR-05, but it seems to work fine for that as well. Once I get done with a few more adjustments I’ll print one of these in black and see how it turns out.
I think this could also work great for a few of those cheaper field recorders that don’t have a built in 1/4 20 mount. If there is enough interest in a few of these plastic camera parts I’ve been making, maybe I’ll add a store tab to the site and do a small run of 50. Let me know if this sounds like something you guys might be interested in.

I already own a proper shock mount for my shotgun mic.. but if this can sell for $10 shipped, can handle a 4 ft drop into concrete (scratches are fine, cracks are not), then I’d say a run of 50 will be sold out FAST.

Really, really nice!!! So i’m waiting for this on Ebay, hehe. I mean it! But i need you’ll be able to ship to Brazil!
And one shock mount for rodemic (like boom mic, without support), will be nice.
😉
Nice work, congratz

Not to be the grammar police…BUT you frequently use the word ‘quit’ in place of ‘quite.’ Other synonyms you could use are: very, fairly, rather, somewhat, slightly, relatively, comparatively, moderately, reasonably, to a certain extent; informal pretty, kind of, kinda. I enjoy the blog, otherwise.

I’ll keep an eye on that. I only took the minimum required English classes in collage and it shows. 😉

Hi there,
I’m going to get a mic for my T2i and i’m not sure what to go for. My budget is under 170$.
I’m thinking either the Rode videomic or the tascam- dr05/07 and getting Sescom LN2MIC-ZMH4-MON Y-Splitter cable.
What would you recommend? I’m leaning towards the Tascam myself but im not sure.
Thanks,
Josh

You should add a section to your site with $10 Gear. Add this plus your right angle adapter. There are a few things I would be making as well.
I wonder if you could make this with out a cutting board, just building the pieces with your Makerbot: http://www.diyphotography.net/convert-an-ikea-cutting-board-to-a-camera-video-rig

That sounds like a good plan. I also look into that design when I get a little bit more time. I have a CNC machine that might do a better job on something that big.

I could totally use one of these. Is there a 1/4″ thread on the bottom of the cold shoe mount? I don’t use a DSLR, and the thread would let me mount it on pistol grip devices. I could always add my own thread, of course, but I was wondering if you had already incorporated it into your design.
Keep up the Makerbot madness!

Yep, there is a 1/4 20 thread running through the middle of the cold shoe adapter. One of the pictures has it threaded to the side of my DSLR rig and threads are metal. If you want one of the prototypes and don’t mind white let me know and i’ll hook you up for $3.

Hi,
you are always mentioning black printouts – is the black “ink” more expensive than the creamy-white one?
And: How long does it take to print a “thing” like the shockmount?

The black abs plastic is about $75 a spool, a spool of white plastic comes with the machine. So I was using up the white plastic before I start using the costly stuff. It takes about 30 to 40 min to print depending the size and shape and fill rate.

It seems that you love creating things with your Makerbot. Haha Keep them up and put them on sale 🙂

Deejay, have you created a place to get some suggestions for DIY Parts?

I’m working on it. I going to try and have a new tab up on the site by the end of next week.

Cool, I’m sure your inbox is blowing up with requests. I’d like to see what the makerbot is capable of!

Sign me and my DR-07 up. Awesome idea.

Let me know when this is ready – I’ll buy one right away.
Thanks.
